Abstract
Upcoming Legislations to Boost Emerging U.S. Biodegradable Polymer Market
The growing concern over pollution caused by nonbiodegradable plastic wastes
and the rising cost associated with the transportation, maintenance, disposal,
and energy consumption of such wastes is driving the U.S. towards biodegradable
polymers. Though there is no strict regulation to enforce the usage of
biodegradable polymers, the federal government supports it in principle and is
expected to come out with stringent regulations that will favor biodegradable
polymers. About 22 states in the U.S. have already enforced landfill taxes as an
initial step toward building an environment-friendly society.
This Frost & Sullivan research offers an in-depth analysis of the
emerging U.S. biodegradable polymer market and its segments such as lactic acid,
starch-based, co polyester, and polycapralactone-based polymers. It presents an
extensive segment-wise analysis of the latest market and technological trends,
drivers, and restraints enabling market participants to develop better strategic
marketing plans.
New Markets for Biodegradable Polymers to Play Key Role in Increasing
Demand
"Superior product performance properties coupled with competitive
pricing is anticipated to enable biodegradable polymers replacing many
applications catered by conventional polymers in the years to come," says
Frost & Sullivan research analyst R P Bhaskaran. Opening up of new markets
means an increase in biodegradable polymer consumption. New end-user
applications like computer parts, disposable razors and cameras, medical
products, sports goods, and mobile phones are being targeted, and the
performance characteristics required are being improved.
Companies manufacturing biodegradable polymers conduct extensive research and
development to equip polymers with properties which enable them to cater to
various applications, thereby increasing the scope of the product offering.
Trials are being conducted for validation of these characteristics before
commercialization. Biodegradable polymers are also being tried out in
applications where conventional polymers are traditionally being used. This
market innovation is expected to propel the growth of biodegradable polymers in
the U.S.
Declining Price Trend Drives Growth
Given that the biodegradable polymer market is emerging and demand is still
low, the price of biodegradable polymers is comparatively higher than that of
conventional polymers. However, there is a decreasing price trend in
biodegradable polymer resins. This is due to the acceptance of biodegradable
polymer products by environment conscious companies which are replacing
conventional polymers in numerous applications. The unique properties of
biodegradability also translate into lesser disposal costs. "The price is
expected to further decrease due to innovative manufacturing practices, market
innovation and distinctive product features that are likely to create demand in
the market," states Bhaskaran.
Though the government is currently not offering benefits to support this
industry, the anticipated regulations favoring environmental protection could
raise further demand for biodegradable polymers.
