Abstract
This IDC study provides an analysis of the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan)
region, or APEJ, mobile online gaming market. Market sizing and forecast of
wireless online gamers in selected countries in the region are provided, thus
presenting readers with a current analysis of opportunities and trends present
in today's mobile gaming market. In the past couple of years, the APEJ mobile
online gaming space was largely characterized by stages of gradual yet
interesting growth. Gradual because not all markets in the region have adopted
mobile gaming in the same manner, owing to different levels of availability of
technology and the size of the user base in each market. Interesting because
given the rate at which online gaming has evolved into a fairly lucrative
business, players have identified mobile gaming as the online gaming sector
that will become the next growth area or alternative revenue source.
Augusto Roman Carlos, market analyst, Software, IDC Philippines, states, "As
the mobile online gaming industry continues to evolve and make inroads within
key markets in APEJ, such progress is highly dependent on the collaborative
efforts of two key sectors within the mobile gaming value chain: providers and
carriers. In addition, developments in the technology space, such as 3G
adoption, advancements in handset functionality and availability, and the
maturation of Java and BREW-based software platforms, will be positive drivers.
Still, such positive developments do not discount the fact that certain factors
continue to exist, which hinder mobile gaming from realizing its full
potential."
