Abstract
This IDC study looks at the worldwide and U.S. UMPC market and forecasts
shipments out to 2011.
"UMPCs are one of the new product types to come out of the market' s recent
emphasis on the notebook market. There has been considerable confusion around
what a UMPC is, who it targets, and what kind of market opportunity it
represents. Much of the confusion comes from a lack of consistent definition.
The definition we are using for UMPC is a notebook unit with a screen less than
7in. diagonally across, weighing about 1-1.5lbs, running a full operating
system, and compatible with applications used in a typical notebook or desktop
PC. Our forecast calls for a rather conservative shipment outlook for the next
four years for UMPCs. This is partly because there is still strong demand for
basic notebooks during the forecast period and marketing behind the value of
UMPCs hasn' t been clearly articulated." - Richard Shim, research manager with
