Abstract

Long-term care insurance addresses an important financial concern for individuals: how to fund expensive health care-related services that may quickly exhaust retirement resources. Much of the public does not understand the need for the product; furthermore, it is emotionally difficult for individuals to contemplate a future in which they are no longer self-sufficient.

This report reviews issues in the long-term care industry and provides answers to the following questions:

  • How has long-term care insurance performed in recent years in terms of sales? Which companies are the market share leaders?
  • What trends can be observed in direct mail for the long-term care insurance product?
  • How has recent legislation impacted the industry?
  • Which product innovations are gaining rapid acceptance in the marketplace?
  • Which consumer segments are most likely to own long-term care insurance? What are consumers' primary reasons for buying-or not buying-it?
  • What is the outlook for long-term care insurance?
