Abstract
With a growing number of passengers transported, with more and longer routes
flown, airlines are looking at improving the flight experience of its
ever-demanding customers. Building on a successful deployment for crew
communications and business jet customers, players in the market are eyeing
with glee the captive audience of over 2 billion passengers flying around the
world as a source of additional revenues from a growing offering of in-flight
entertainment services that overtook the corporate magazine era.
Moving to new voice, data and video global broadband services, commercial
airlines are not just continuing to expand service to high-paying business
class customers with more luxury than ever before; they are also ensuring
revenue is generated throughout the aircraft.
This and other factors are leading to development of an expanded suite of
satellite communications products and services to offer connectivity above
10,000 feet with Internet, mobile telephony and a host of other applications
that defy the demise of the commercial Connexion by Boeing program.
Fixed satellite services (FSS) operators have joined the mobile satellite
services (MSS) players in the aeronautical market, with onboard GSM, in-flight
live TV and hotspots-in-the-sky. The competition is not just from various
satellite solutions, however, and ground-to-air solutions are also in the
development stages. The regulatory hurdles are many and their impact varies by
region and type of services, which could delay the expected huge commercial
potential.
What are the uncertainties surrounding market acceptance and security
requirements for these satellite solutions in the airline industry today? What
are the expected returns for service providers and operators alike? What
developments and services can be expected to sustain growth in the long run?
Is there a play for mobile telephony via satellite on aircraft? What are the
drivers for the current and new satellite services for this emerging market?
Are there regions that will lead for certain types of services? How many
broadband mobile satellite units and bandwidth can be expected to address this
market?
These and other aspects of the MSS Aero market are assessed in this latest NSR
study. NSR addresses the general market trends, aero user requirements, and
the role that satellites can play, as well as the regulatory and business
issues that affect the use of satellite-based systems and services in aero
markets. NSR also quantifies demand and revenue forecasts for the various aero
market segments identified that satellites can target.
